Productivity Tips from: firefighters!

Written by: The 8020 Blueprint Team

When it comes to careers that need to be efficient with each moment, first responders are high up on the list. Fire fighters have a clear cut method for tackling problems and getting the emergency under control quickly. They focus on using the right tools for the job, communicate clearly and use scenario training to their advantage. These are tips we can put into practice ourselves and boost our productivity!

Using the right equipment for the job.

Trying to type up and proofread your big presentation on an Excel document is possible, but probably not the right tool. Firehouse.com discusses using the right tools for the specific fire crews to make sure they’re effective. Using the wrong tool can take up extra time and lead to some serious frustrations.

If your task is specialized and you’re doing some prep work prior to getting started then a good thing to check is the right tools and documents. Could a simple document work or do you really need a project management software? On the other hand, do you really need a 4 page spreadsheet (complete with customized color formatting) for what should really be a printed sheet in a binder?

Having the right tool for the job lets us not have to waste time making or forcing things work!

Clear communication

Firerescue1.com describes communication as a skill thats absolutely necessary both in and out of the firehouse. The very first tip that Harvard has in their article on improving communication is to be clear. During a fire, responders have to be clear about whats happening and who is going into the building.

In order to be able to delegate our 80% tasks and focus on what matters, we have to be able to communicate clearly. That might include the tasks, what outcomes were looking for, what resources are available to help, and how you’d like it completed.

Scenario training

For complex tasks and operations, training can be a huge difference between a slow and clunky process and a smooth and efficient one. During an emergency, responders need to know exactly whats needed and how their supposed to handle that task. Sometimes oversight over everything just isn’t possible.

If we want to delegate routine processes (and boost our productivity), sometimes we have to train others in how things work. Using scenarios can be a great way to teach and show others how to use equipment. Aspiringfireofficers.com describes these scenarios as more of an immersive experience that can be incredibly helpful. Often times creating a simulated problem or input can be easily created without extra costs. Then you have an aid you can reuse later if more explanation is needed!
